Handmade vs. Mass-Produced: How to Tell the Difference
Handmade ceramics and mass-produced ceramics can look similar in a photo, but they feel different once you know what to look for.
Weight and glaze are the first giveaways. Hand-glazed pieces almost always show small, natural variation — a slightly different depth of color from one piece to the next, or subtle brush texture in the finish. Mass-produced pieces are sprayed or dipped identically down the line, so every unit looks exactly the same.
Look at the base and the seams. Molded, hand-poured ceramics often show a faint seam line where the mold halves met, cleaned by hand rather than sanded flat by a machine — a small imperfection that's actually a sign a real person finished that specific piece.
Finally, ask where it's made and by whom. A maker who can tell you which piece they personally poured, glazed, and fired — not just which factory it shipped from — is the clearest sign you're getting the real thing.
